Arguably the flagship of the Serena fleet is the Serena Ngorongoro, a property so magnificently poised that it must have without doubt one of the, if not the most spectacular view in the world.
It would hardly matter what hospitality standards were applied, since almost nothing can diffuse the majesty of this view. Naturally standards of service, as is usual at Serena lodges, are extremely high, as is the design and decor and general standards of comfort.
The structure, although eccentric, is thoughtful and unusual, giving every possible advantage to the sweeping vistas of the Ngorongoro Crater.
It would be hard to imagine a setting more propitious for the construction of a hotel. The crater highlands are very different from the dusty plains below, with a great deal more verdure and a cool highland climate. The crater itself covers an area of 3200 sq miles and is a contained habitat that supports an extraordinarily diverse wildlife population, as well as a small community of Masai permitted since its inception to roam with their cattle in the crater reserve.
The lodge presents an eccentric picture as one drives onto the forecourt. It is constructed of pebbles and as such seems to have a repressed aquatic theme. However once inside a more predictable image of Africa emerges, although this time with a Scottish fishing lodge ambience that is somewhat in keeping the with class of early colonists that this area once attracted.
Beyond the reception area the true character of the building is revealed. It is strung along the edge of the crater, with rooms all facing east to the sunrise, and the bar and dining area heavy with plate glass to do absolute justice to the view.
The various areas of the lodge are accessible by raised walkways that lead either to the lounge and dining area, or to the rooms. Each room is small but comfortably appointed, and poised once again to reap the reward of a spectacular view. Elegance is understated and attention to detail adequate without being overbearing.
The public area is a showcase for the crater sprawling below, and there is something undeniably decadent in sipping a cocktail at the bar and gazing down on such resplendent nature. Bar and dining facilities are at the usual Serena standard, and the ambience is of course carefully contrived and spectacularly effective.
Evening entertainment has an authentic cultural flavor, with local groups of singers, performers and acrobats performing each night.
Internet and phone facilities are available, as well as Bureau de Change and various local excursions.
Absolutely shocking quantities of local indigenous hardwood have been used in the construction of this lodge. This is particularly evident along the walkway which must have utilized a good many local hardwood trees in its construction. Besides that the bias towards pebble construction is not only interesting but solid and eco-friendly, so a reasonable balance of responsibility exists.
The Serena Ngorongoro flies the flag high for the Serena chain, and arguably this is one of the most beautiful establishments in the world. It is a refreshing change to be surrounded by what is authentically beautiful (the crater) and not artificially contrived ambiences of Africa. Throughout the décor here is softly understated while the service and hospitality is second to none. Most interestingly though is the novelty of unusual design and confident layout.
